When I first started my pub I set a word limit at 1000, then dropped the word count when I realized it was silly. I’m a fan of tight writing, so if a story works better in 500 words than it would in a thousand I’m all for cutting the fat.

But I agree that there are too many stories that seem to be notes on a story, not ready for prime time. It depends on the writer. Sometimes a great story deserves a lot of space, but we’re not the New Yorker here. A 2000 or 3000 word story would have to be spectacular in order for me to read it.
