There is a stigma against self-publishing and some of it is unwarranted. Many good writers self-publish for reasons of their own, but, as with Medium, when the process is too easy and without restrictions it’s almost impossible to sift through it all to find the good stuff.

And too often the good writers get lumped in with the bad because there are no obvious dividing lines. Medium makes half-hearted divisions with front page placement, curation, and publications but the outside world only sees a mountain of self-published, self-edited stories.

Add their paywall to that and there’s really no reason for anyone on the outside to come looking for us.

But there would if the writing were consistently better.
