Shaunta Grimes Gave Me a Reason To Come Back To Medium
Yes, it’s a click-baity title, but it’s true.
I wasn’t going to read Shaunta Grimes’ latest blog, My Thoughts About Medium’s Creator Fellowship. Why would I? I wasn’t invited. But it was Shaunta and I hadn’t seen her around for a while. The truth is, I’ve missed her.
Her subtitle, ‘And whether this is still a good place to blog’ intrigued me. I knew most of the top dogs have seen their incomes drop like rocks. I know that because they’re writing about it. Over and over and over. The constant talk about Medium money — for months now — is why I left in the first place.
So…is it?
Shaunta thinks Medium is still a good place to blog. And I was so ready to disagree. No! No! I said NO! But she makes some good points. So good I had to rethink it, and it turns out it might still be a good place, even for me. Not as my only home, but as a second or maybe a third home. One I can leave and come back to any time I want.
I’ll never again look on Medium as that place where we might become such good friends it’ll reward me over some other unlucky writer who believes, too, that Medium should like them best. I did that once. I fell into the ‘contest’ trap and forgot that Medium’s only obligation to me is to provide me with a nice place to write.
