Pink Is The New Tough
Reviewing Rebecca Sive’s “Vote Her In”
When I was a little girl, pink was my very favorite color. Shocking pink. The pinkest pink pink could ever be. Lay it on me. I had black hair and an olive complexion and I wore pink every chance I got.
As I grew, the color wheel changed and I was shamed into giving up my beloved pink for colors more suited to a young lady: Black, brown, gray, gray-black, gray-brown, gray-green, gray-blue, gray-aqua…you couldn’t go wrong with muted tones. Pink was a girly color.
So when I skimmed Rebecca Sive’s book, Vote Her In, and saw the pages filled with screaming, in-your-face, yell-it-loud pink, I clutched it to my chest. Yeehaw!
I wanted to wear it.
But first I wanted to read it. The book is the brainchild of Rebecca Sive, the author of Every Day is Election Day: A Woman’s Guide to Winning Any Office, from the PTA to the White House. She is a long-time mover and shaker in the Women’s Movement. Her bona fides include having a hand in founding the Illinois Human Rights Commission and the Chicago Foundation for Women. She was a part of a national group of women leaders who developed women’s issues agendas for Presidents Clinton and Obama. She taught at the U of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy. She’s not just an observer, she’s a doer.
