One More Plea to Stop Talking About Your Income
Writers write and some get paid big bucks. The best of them don’t brag about it.
I’m not going to hedge or pussyfoot here, I’m just going to say it: I’m sick to death of seeing another headline about how much money a writer made on Medium.
Jesus, people! Give it a rest!
It’s one thing to comment about it on Facebook, but to publish an entire STORY so you can brag about the money you made? It’s tacky. It’s dumb. It’s lazy. It’s hurtful, and it’s downright STRANGE. Nowhere else where writers gather to talk about their work do they emphasize the money they make. It’s not the thing that keeps writers together.
It’s the WORK that makes us proud, that gives us the impetus to move forward. I seriously don’t give a shit about how much some writer makes while writing. I can honestly say I’ve never talked about the money I’ve made writing. It would never even cross my mind. I’m a full time writer, not a would-be entrepreneur.
I’ve been in plenty of environments with writers who were extremely successful but not a single one of them ever bragged about how much money they made. In my circles they would have come down more than a few notches in our respect for them. What kind of writer thinks more about the money than…
