I wouldn’t say Medium cost me anything. It just didn’t work for me for all those reasons. It is an easy platform to use but so is Substack and I truly feel like I’m part of a caring community there. Their support is amazing, always patient, always willing to help. Maybe that will change, too, as they grow, but right now it meets my needs as a writer.
At Medium I felt like a participant at Woodstock — lost in a strange huge crowd, never knowing what might come next. It works for a lot of writers and I’m happy they’re happy but if, as you say, so much of it is hidden and works against them, they do need to know that. So what you’re doing here is good. Medium needs to decide what it wants to be and that hasn’t happened yet. It’s a shame. They had everything going for them. I hope they don’t blow it.
